Course Information

Day 1
Introduction to Ageing Assets
• What are ageing assets? Understanding asset lifecycle phases
• The impact of ageing on oil and gas infrastructure:
o Pipelines
o Pressure vessels and storage tanks
o Offshore platforms
o Process plants and refineries
• Key challenges: degradation mechanisms, obsolete technology, increased failure risk
• Case studies: high-profile incidents linked to ageing assets (e.g., Piper Alpha, Deepwater Horizon)

Day 2
Degradation Mechanisms and Failure Modes
Corrosion and Erosion
o Internal corrosion (MIC, sweet and sour corrosion)
o External corrosion (coating failures, CP system degradation)
Mechanical damage
o Fatigue and stress corrosion cracking (SCC)
o Creep and embrittlement
• Environmental effects:
o Seawater exposure for offshore assets
o Hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC)
Case study: pipeline rupture due to corrosion fatigue

Day 3
Regulatory Frameworks and Industry Standards
Overview of global regulations for asset integrity
o API 570 — Piping Inspection Code
o API 580/581 — Risk-Based Inspection (RBI)
o ISO 55000 — Asset Management
o NORSOK standards (offshore assets)
• Compliance strategies for ageing assets
• Case study: aligning an asset integrity program with regulatory requirements

Day 4
Risk-Based Inspection (RBI) for Ageing Assets
• Principles of Risk-Based Inspection (RBI)
• Risk assessment matrix: Probability of Failure (PoF) × Consequence of Failure (CoF)
• Prioritizing inspection and maintenance activities
• Developing an RBI program for ageing pipelines and pressure vessels
• Software tools for RBI (Meridium, DNV Synergi)

Day 5
Life Extension Strategies for Ageing Assets
• Life cycle assessments: predicting remaining asset life
• Life extension strategies:
o Material upgrades (composite repair, coating renewal)
o Enhanced cathodic protection (CP) systems
o Structural strengthening for offshore platforms
• Fitness-for-service (FFS) evaluations using API 579-1/ASME FFS-1
• Case study: Extending the operational life of a subsea pipeline network

Ageing Assets Training Course

This training course provides participants with a comprehensive understanding of ageing assets in the oil and gas industry, focusing on the challenges, risks, and management strategies required to maintain the integrity and performance of ageing infrastructure. It emphasizes proactive maintenance, risk-based inspection (RBI), and life extension strategies to optimize asset value and ensure safe operations.

• Understand the concept of ageing assets and their implications for oil and gas operations
• Identify the key factors contributing to asset ageing (corrosion, fatigue, obsolescence, etc.)
• Conduct risk assessments and develop risk-based inspection (RBI) plans for ageing assets
• Implement life extension strategies for critical infrastructure
• Apply condition monitoring and integrity assessment techniques
• Interpret relevant industry regulations and standards (API, ISO, NACE, etc.)
• Develop an Ageing Asset Management Plan (AAMP)
• Analyse real-world case studies of asset failures and best practices

• Asset integrity managers
• Maintenance and reliability engineers
• Corrosion and materials engineers
• HSE professionals
• Operations and facility managers
• Risk analysts and inspection personnel
